4X4 & 4WD Cars

4WD cars are great for escaping suburbia and exploring our other bigger backyard – the rough Australian 4x4 country side and outback.

But do you really need the full power of a 4WD vehicle? Or do you just want to enjoy a car with your sense of adventure and added safety in basic off-road conditions?

The 4WD range for Kia includes the Kia Sportage and the Kia Sorento

Check out the range of Kia All Wheel Drive (AWD) cars or read on to learn more about 4WDs and AWDs and which one is right for you.

What is a Four Wheel Drive (4WD)?

Your standard on-road city car relies on a 2WD system to power movement. This is normally more than enough power to get around the smooth bitumen roads.

A 4WD (sometimes referred to as a 4x4 or Four by Four) on the other hand was designed to tackle situations where extra traction is needed. Rocky paths where one or more wheels may lose traction, river crossings, and snowy or muddy conditions are all examples where a 4WD might be a perfect solution.

However 4WDs aren’t designed to be driven on road and you may cause serious damage to the vehicle if you do (hence most modern 4WD come with an option to switch the power on and off).

What is an AWD?

AWD drive stands for All Wheel Drive, whilst this sounds similar to a 4WD it is a completely different mechanical concept and much better for most people’s needs.

With the use of modern technology All Wheel Drive vehicles are able to automatically split and transfer power to the wheels that need it most. In comparison to a 4WD that uses low gear power to slowly maneuver over rough terrain, this innovation is perfect for use in more common fast slippery conditions where different wheels need to quickly get different amounts of traction to grip the road.

As an extra benefit to the added safety, AWD cars often have a much sportier feeling compared to a broad range of cars.

What’s best a 4WD or an AWD?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. First it’s important to establish what you want to use your new car for – hopefully the above definitions helped you a little bit. After establishing what you need the car for, you will have a much clearer view of what specifications you need in a new car.

Some people believe that if your car looks like a 4WD you should only drive it in the country. But you should never judge a book by its cover. Here are a few reasons we have found our customers choose an AWD over a 4WD.

1. Weekend Outdoor And Sports Lovers

Australia is full of national parks close to our famous cities and towns. If you’re a weekend warrior who loves the great outdoors (bush walker/paraglider/outdoor photographer/mountain biker etc.), and simply want a great vehicle that will get you to those more rough terrains an AWD may be a perfect choice for zipping to your happy place.

2. Off-Road Family Holiday

If you’re looking for a car which can take your family on off-road holiday adventures an AWD may still be a perfect car to get you there. Instead of splashing out on a 4WD (which may only get used once a year), hire a 4WD once at your more rough location. Then you also don’t have to worry about damaging your family car!

3. Style And Function

Perhaps you require a 7 seater car to move your kids around, but prefer the stylish looks and high seating of a 4WD to a people mover? An AWD is definitely the best choice for you. Gain all the benefits of the 4WD without the unnecessary cost and features you don’t need.

4. Boat Lovers

Do you own a boat and love to get out on the open water much more than tackling dusty dirt bowls? Depending on the weight of your boat an AWD car may provide sufficient traction to launch your boat on slippery ramps.

5. Easy Flexibility

Are you in your golden years and have a little less flexibility than you used to? If you find it difficult to get in and out of your cars lower seats, stepping up into a higher vehicle can make your life much easier!

Kia AWDs

We won’t be surprised when you discover that Kia’s award winning range of AWD cars are not only great for tackling trickier driving conditions, they are also the perfect choice for those who love stylish and spacious city cruising with a little bit of extra oommf and space.

Whilst the Kia AWD range wasn’t designed for extreme off-road adventuring, all our AWDs have enough power to help you safely enjoy demanding gravel, dirt tracks and slippery road conditions with ease.

So whether you’re ready to kick up some dust or simply need to burn rubber to pick up the kids from school, the 5 star safety rating, tough AWD capabilities and spacious room of the Kia AWD range offer practicality without sacrificing design and power.

Kia Sportage

With standout style, the Kia Sportage lacks nothing in the looks department with 7 stylish colours. And, while it contains all the performance capabilities of a true AWD, it still ticks all the comfort boxes with a spacious and luxurious interior that’s packed with heaps of storage options, advanced features and four wheel drive (4WD) accessories.

Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento is not your ordinary AWD. It has evolved to become as much a city cruiser as an off-roader. The seven-seater incorporates high-tech features such as a built-in satellite navigation system allowing you to get from A to B easily, as well as comfortably. Even with all all of the seats of the 7 Seater 4WD  style Kia Sorento in use, there is an array of creative storage ideas and thoughtful accessories to enhance your journey.
